TEHRAN, Iran โ The Iranian Revolutionary Guards announced they carried out an attack on positions belonging to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in Sulaymaniyah, in Iraq's Kurdistan Region. According to Iran's official news agency IRNA, the operation targeted what were described as centers of anti-Islamic Republic terror groups.
Local reports indicated explosion sounds were heard in some areas of Sulaymaniyah. The Iranian Kurdish opposition groups targeted in the strike have rejected Tehran's security accusations, saying their activities fall within the scope of political opposition.
Iran maintains that the opposition groups operating in the region pose a direct threat to its national security. Similar attacks have been carried out previously using missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.
