Infineon opens €5 billion chip plant in Germany

BERLIN — German semiconductor manufacturer Infineon opened a new microchip factory on Thursday, built with an investment of approximately €5 billion. The company said the facility will produce power semiconductors and is designed to meet rising chip demand across Europe. The plant is expected to supply components for several sectors, including artificial intelligence applications, data centers and electric vehicles. Infineon said mass production at the site is planned to begin in 2026. Company officials said the investment aims to reduce Europe's dependence on Asian chip manufacturers and strengthen the region's technological autonomy. The European Commission has been supporting similar investments under the European Chips Act to expand semiconductor production capacity across the continent.
