Hong Kong records highest temperature since 1884 as typhoon approaches

HONG KONG — Hong Kong recorded its highest temperature since official records began in 1884 on Sunday afternoon, the Hong Kong Observatory said. The reference station at Tsim Sha Tsui registered 36.9 degrees Celsius at 3:15 p.m. local time, surpassing the previous record of 36.6 degrees set on August 22, 2017, ahead of Typhoon Hato. The Observatory reported that temperatures at other parts of the city also reached 37 degrees or higher. At Sheung Shui in the north, 39.7 degrees was recorded, the highest since automatic weather stations were introduced in the 1980s. The Observatory said the record heat was linked to Typhoon Dolphin as it approached the eastern coast of China. It added that the air mass surrounding the tropical storm would continue to bring extreme heat to the region throughout the week as the system moved toward Zhejiang and inland areas.
