Germany coach Nagelsmann resigns after World Cup exit to Paraguay

Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as head coach of Germany's national football team following the side's elimination from the World Cup by Paraguay. Germany lost the round-of-32 match on penalties after 120 minutes ended goalless, exiting the tournament at an early stage. Nagelsmann, 38, had a contract running until summer 2028 but accepted the German Football Association's (DFB) request to step down, according to German media reports. He had been in charge of the national team since September 2023. Federation officials conveyed the request on Thursday after roughly three hours of talks following the latest tournament setback. The DFB is expected to formally announce the decision in the coming hours. German media have identified former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp as a leading candidate to replace Nagelsmann, reporting that a verbal agreement exists on a release clause between Klopp and Red Bull that would allow him to consider an offer from the national team.
