BRUSSELS, Belgium โ A fire at a central Brussels construction site has killed five people, with one worker still unaccounted for, the Brussels prosecutor's office said. Authorities warned that additional bodies could be found as the search continues.
Officials said the blaze began on a small scale on the second floor of a building at the site and was extinguished by firefighters, who then carried out a control sweep of the large construction area. During that inspection, rescue crews reached an elevator cabin and found several bodies inside. Local media reported that the remains were located in the elevator.
Approximately 250 workers were on the site when the fire broke out on Tuesday, according to officials. Rescue and investigative operations were ongoing.
The prosecutor's office said authorities were still working to confirm the final death toll and account for the missing worker.
