BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” Water expert Radu al-Kaysi said on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, that potential flood risks in Iraq remain largely under control because of the country's geography and water structures. He said flood periods are not continuous and are limited to specific areas. Al-Kaysi said there is some risk in parts of the west, north and south, but noted that natural depressions such as Tharthar, Razaza and Habbaniye can absorb large volumes of water. He also said the Mosul, Hemrin, Dibis and Samarra dams are capable of storing high amounts of water. He said flooding seen in cities is mostly caused by heavy rainfall and the wear of rainwater drainage lines. While this can damage some agricultural land and cause economic losses, he said it usually does not turn into widespread destruction.
