Expert Calls for National Strategy Behind Baghdad Green Belt Project

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Environmental expert Adil Muhtar said Baghdad’s green belt project is an important tool in the fight against desertification, but warned that it cannot solve the problem on its own. He said the project needs to be part of a national strategy that includes water management, soil protection and the restoration of vegetation. Muhtar said green belts can reduce the impact of dust storms, stabilize soil and improve the local climate. He added that their effectiveness will remain limited as long as water shortages, the decline of natural vegetation and the overuse of water resources continue. He also said rising temperatures, lower rainfall and higher evaporation are putting additional pressure on tree-planting projects.
