Erbil Education Museum hosts Arabic calligraphy day at historic school building

ERBIL, Iraq — The Erbil Education Museum and Archive hosted a cultural and artistic event on Thursday at the historic Erbil First School building to mark Arabic Calligraphy Day. The program featured an exhibition of selected calligraphic panels reflecting the aesthetics of Arabic script and its different stylistic schools. Museum and archive director Umid Berzenji said the institution opens its doors to such events as part of its mission to safeguard the national and educational memory. He noted that Arabic calligraphy is not merely a writing tool but also a carrier of civilization and culture. Calligrapher Muhammad Aqrawi, who took part in the exhibition, said holding the event inside a historic educational institution carried particular meaning. He added that classical and contemporary calligraphy samples demonstrate the living and renewable nature of the art. Organizers said the event brought together academics, art enthusiasts and members of the public, with speakers emphasizing the importance of preserving the calligraphy heritage for cultural identity and communication.
