Dokan Dam in Sulaymaniyah is expected to reach full capacity for the third time in its history within the next 10 days, raising expectations of a major holiday influx during the Eid Al-Adha break. Local officials say the reservoir is now just 82 centimetres below the 511-metre full level.
Sirwan Sarhat, the mayor of Dokan district in Sulaymaniyah, said the dam is approaching full capacity for the third time. The timing is expected to coincide with Eid Al-Adha, creating strong movement in the area.
When the dam last reached full capacity in 2019, more than one million visitors came from different Iraqi cities and from abroad. Local authorities are now preparing for a similar surge in tourism activity.
The local administration has coordinated with relevant institutions to manage the expected crowds. Preparations include expanding services at tourist sites and entertainment facilities around the dam, securing necessary supplies and arranging traffic measures.
Rising water levels at Dokan Dam are expected to provide a direct and positive boost to Sulaymaniyah’s tourism sector.
