KIRKUK, Iraq โ A child drowned in a stream in the Dakuk district south of Kirkuk, local authorities said. The body was recovered on Friday evening following an extended search-and-rescue operation in a water channel in the area.
According to the river police source, the child, born in 2009, had traveled to Dakuk with several others to swim and was swept away by the current at around 4:00 p.m. The child was a resident of the Tariq Company neighborhood in central Kirkuk.
Officials said legal procedures have been initiated at the scene and the body has been transferred to the relevant authorities to complete the judicial process. No further details were immediately available on the investigation.
The incident comes as summer temperatures drive children and young people to unguarded water sources, a recurring cause of drowning fatalities in Iraq during the warmer months.
