Basra lawmaker moves to cancel presidential palace investment, turn site into green space

BASRA, Iraq — A member of parliament from Basra, Abu Turab al-Tamimi, has submitted a request to the prime minister calling for the cancellation of an investment project linked to presidential palaces in the city and for the site to be converted into a green area. In his submission, al-Tamimi said the request was made in line with citizens' demands. He argued that turning the site into public green space would give Basra residents a place to breathe, expand the city's limited green areas and contribute to environmental improvement. The lawmaker also stressed that any use of the site should serve the public interest and the residents of Basra. The Prime Minister's Office and relevant authorities are expected to make a final assessment of the request.
