BAGHDAD, Iraq — Documents surfaced in Basra requesting an administrative appointment at a state institution based on a reference letter linked to Ala al-Haidari, a member of parliament for Basra and head of the "Al-Asas" parliamentary bloc, reigniting debate over political patronage in public hiring. Critics said the paperwork illustrates a broader pattern in which state positions are distributed through political intermediaries rather than on merit. Al-Haidari's opponents resurfaced earlier controversies surrounding the lawmaker, reviving past political and ethical allegations, which he had previously denied. Al-Haidari has not publicly responded to the latest claims. Officials said any irregularities in the appointment process will be referred to oversight and judicial bodies, with all necessary procedures carried out within the framework of the law.
