Baghdad police arrest suspect in 100 million dinar theft in Karkh

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Police in Baghdad's Karkh district arrested a man accused of stealing 100 million Iraqi dinar from a citizen, the Karkh Police Directorate's anti-crime unit said on Monday. In a written statement, the Murder and Theft Combating Unit said the suspect was described as a "professional" thief and was apprehended as part of a security operation. Officers formed a special team to locate him, gathered information, monitored his movements and examined existing evidence before identifying his identity and whereabouts, the statement said. The suspect confessed to the crime during initial interrogation, according to the unit. Legal proceedings have been initiated and the case has been referred to the judiciary, it added. The police unit said the suspect would face the punishment prescribed by law. No further details were immediately available.
