BAGHDAD, Iraq — Authorities in Baghdad activated water-spraying systems across central districts on Tuesday as temperatures neared 50°C, disrupting daily activity in streets and markets across the capital. Officials said the systems were introduced to ease the impact of the heat and lower the felt temperature for pedestrians.
Weather observer Ali Jaber al-Ziyadi had said on Monday that the current heat wave would end on Wednesday, noting that Tuesday would be its final day. He added that temperatures in southern cities could reach 50°C.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, increase water intake and take precautions against heat-related fatigue. No further details on the duration of the cooling measures were immediately available.
