Ammunition explosions reported at Taji military camp in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Explosions of ammunition occurred at the Taji military camp in the capital on Sunday, Iraq's Security Media Cell head Major General Saad Maan said. He told Shafaq News the blasts were triggered by high air temperatures and involved detonations of stored munitions. Maan said civil defense teams were continuing efforts to extinguish the fire and that work was under way to bring the incident under control. No casualties were mentioned in his statement. Earlier, a security source told Shafaq News that a fire had broken out at Taci camp in ammunition and weapons storage areas. The source said the loud blasts heard during the fire were caused by munitions detonating as the blaze spread. Taji, north of Baghdad, has hosted U.S. and coalition forces in previous years and has been the site of past rocket attacks and security incidents. No further details were immediately available.
